THE HISTORIC AIRPLANE FILLING STATION

OAKWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

KNOXVILLE, KNOX COUNTY, TN
The Community Design Center was asked by city of Knoxville Community Development to develop and facilitate a process that would fulfill the Board Of Education request to study the possible uses for Oakwood Elementary School. We developed a public involvement process, assembled a stakeholder steering committee, and a team of volunteer professional advisors to assist the Center. The process consisted of documenting the existing building conditions, creating a historical timeline, and organizing and facilitating a public input meeting.

DOWNTOWN YWCA

KNOXVILLE, KNOX COUNTY, TN
The YWCA of Knoxville has a long and honorable history of serving women and their families, and of working hard to end racism in our community. The facility built in 1925 was in great need of modernization and upgrades to meet current safety codes and accomodate more guests.

DOWNTOWN NEWPORT ASSOCIATION

COCKE COUNTY, TN
The Downtown Newport Association along with CDC developed the following objectives to revitalize the city’s downtown: create a vibrant downtown, create an accessible environment for those who occupy and visit downtown Newport, calm traffic, celebrate and commemorate the history of downtown, create an attractive and cohesive downtown experience, and bring downtown to the river.

BLOUNT MANSION CAMPUS PLAN

KNOXVILLE, KNOX COUNTY, TN
The Blount Mansion Association came to the Community Design Center to develop an overall campus master plan to relate the various structures and activities on their site. In addition to the actual Blount Mansion and it’s out-buildings, there is another historic building on the site. The Craighead-Jackson house was built in 1818 and served as a visitors center and office until a new visitor’s center was built on the corner of Hill Avenue and Gay Street. An additional part of the campus planning is to identify reuse opportunities for the house.

HISTORIC DANDRIDGE STREETSCAPE

JEFFERSON COUNTY – TN
Dandridge Community Trust, which is affiliated with Main Street USA, requested help in studying Historic Downtown Dandridge. After several public input meetings, the CDC with Volunteers Barbara Pearman from AICP, and Ben Pethel from ASLA proposed a new streetscape plan. The plan will make the city more pedestrian friendly, environmentally conscious, and enhances the existing historic aesthetic while maintaining its authentic character.

GOOD SAMARITAN CENTER

LENIOR CITY, LOUDON COUNTY – TN
The CDC involvement under the guidance of volunteer Gregor Smee, architect, included renovating the existing facility and designing a new addition to the building. The Good Samaritan organization serves the people of Loudon County by providing food, supplies, and aid. Work was done closely with the organization to determine their greatest needs.

MASCOT PARK

MASCOT, KNOX COUNTY – TN
The CDC involvement began upon the request of Knox County Health Department, Healthy Kids Healthy Community initiative, and the representatives from the Mascot Community. They asked the CDC to add enhancements to the existing park that were discussed during several neighborhood meetings. The design team also studied the overall plan of the city of Mascot and surrounding attributes. A plan was created to show potential future pedestrian and vehicular connections to those attributes.

The Museum of Appalachia proposes to move the Irwin House, near Andersonville, a few miles from the Museum site, located at 2819 Andersonville Highway. The house will serve both as an educational component of it’s extensive collection of historic structures and to provide much needed support space.

PARK CITY PRESBYTERIAN

KNOXVILLE, KNOX COUNTY – TN
The Park City Presbyterian Church at 2204 Linden Avenue was originally built as a frame “Carpenter Gothic” church building in the late 19th century. After a fire, the church was expanded, remodeled, and a brick exterior was added. Magnificent stained glass windows, many of them World War I memorials, are throughout the sanctuary including a few surviving leaded glass windows from before the fire.

Scott Appalachian Industries provides rehabilitation and other services to the physical and mentally disabled men, women, children, and elderly in Scott County and surrounding counties. The organization requested help from CDC to prepare plans for expansion of their facility to consolidate their existing functions currently housed in separate facilities.

KNOXVILLE’S URBAN WILDERNESS & HISTORIC CORRIDOR

KNOX COUNTY, TN
Legacy Parks enlisted the aid of CDC and Landscape Architect volunteer, Sean Vasington to help them identify the existing greenspaces in South Knoxville and develop potential connections between these amenities.
CDC mapped 1,000 acres of greenways, trails, parks, civil war forts, and other public amenities and developed potential future connections between these areas.

EMORY VALLEY ADULT DAY CARE CENTER

ANDERSON COUNTY, TN
The EVCC is a non-profit agency serving individuals with developmental disabilities. They enhance the lives of children, adults, and families in an environment that promotes independence, dignity, and respect.  The CDC was able to design a new facility to consolidate all of their functions to the same side of Emory Valley Road, which will help with the safety of staff and clients.  The design will also better accommodate their services such as: job placement, a workshop program, and an adult day care program.

BELLE MORRIS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

KNOXVILLE, KNOX COUNTY, TN
Belle Morris Elementary School is one of North Knoxville’s oldest schools.  With the continued growth of its population, there is a need for more classrooms and community spaces.  The CDC with the help of a volunteer architect, were asked to design a “green” building addition that could also be used as a teaching tool to help teach students and the community.  The design used sustainable design strategies that are LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified.
